Land birds

Many birds spend most of their time in and around trees, shrubs and grasses. These provide them with food and shelter.

Land birds are a very large and diverse group and live in habitats including grasslands, heath, rocky areas and sand dunes.

Land birds often make their homes in forests, woodlands and arid zones. Forests are places with tall trees and a thick canopy. In Australia the three main types of forest include wet forests, dry forests and rainforests.   Woodlands are places where the trees are spaced apart with heath and grassland in between. They often have open grassy spaces as well as clumps of trees, rocks and bushes.   Even though Australia is the second driest continent in the world the arid zone habitats are full of life, including many bird species.
