Australian Birds

Urban birds

In Australia lots of people live in big cities and towns. Many birds have adapted to live in our gardens, buildings, parks and harbours. Some people create special habitats to encourage birds and other animals to live in their yards. Ponds, bird baths and native plants are some ways to make your garden more appealing to local birds.

Birds often directly interact with people. There are a number of bird species that have adapted well to human habitats. Sometimes favourable aspects of the urban environment can trigger either changes in behaviour or increases in the abundance of the particular species. Occasionally these species can cause a nuisance to humans, such as very noisy species (e.g. Common Koel).
